My Struggle With Social Media


I've been struggling with social media.

 

Instagram is my favorite social media platform. It allows me to connect with my friends and community, and I'm often inspired and learn new things.

 

But when you own a business, social media becomes less fun.

 

You feel pressured to post all the time because that's what the gurus say, it's exhausting to keep up with new features and algorithm changes, and it's discouraging to put so much work into a post for it to receive little engagement.

 

But I'm working to shift the narrative.

Not on Instagram?


It's much easier to generate sales from repeat customers than it is to find new ones.

 

Social media is about building community, the literal “social” aspect of it.

 

It's about sharing what's new with your business in a way that serves your customers and building relationships with them.

 

Of course, if you have a huge advertising budget with a line item for influencer partnerships, then social media is great for exposure. (#tiktokmademebuyit)

 

But for the majority of small businesses like those in retail, hospitality, services, and makers, social media is about engagement, not attraction.

 

Word-of-mouth, email, and SEO are way more effective (and free!) forms of attraction marketing.


On a personal note:

I'm feeling less pulled to post what's going on in my life. I rarely post to my Facebook profile and I feel like if I didn't own a business, I'd rarely post to Instagram too.

I'm working through some health challenges (serious low energy) so I'm focusing on healing myself before re-evaluating how much of my personal life I want to post, and why (or why not), which is why I’m undergoing a social media detox.

But to continue on that last thought, you do not owe your followers that piece of yourself.

Yes, it can build connection and authenticity, but if you're not feeling in the right frame of mind or it feels icky, don't post. Because then it will be forced and your followers will pick up on that.

Just make sure to reflect on why you feel this way because there is a difference between not wanting to share because you're afraid of how it will be received and not wanting to share because you genuinely want to keep your personal life separate.
